Exciting Stuff!

I am really enjoying working on garageband. I am excited to include more audio in the classroom. PhotoPeach also looks like a fantastic resource. Anytime a history teacher can incorporate visuals into a lesson, the students generally respond positively. And lastly, I am interested to try a Wiki. As I have said before, it seems like a good opportunity to allow students to work independently.

Digital Storytelling

Great advice on how to use digital media in the classroom. It is always good for me to be reminded that I will learn how to use this media through trial and error. I often get too frustrated with technology and give up. I need to work on that:(

The Digital World

Digital Storytelling provides another way for students to demonstrate understanding. It also offers students a chance to do something new and different. A digital project could be a nice way to allow students to work independently as well.

Podcasting in the classroom

I enjoyed Edutopia's article on Brent Coley and the success he has had implementing technology into his fifth grade classroom. Coley's students use podcasts to summarize themes at the end of major units. I thought that this was a terrific and straightforward way to use this technology. This assignment will offer students a way to show their knowledge in a new way, other than simply writing a page summary. I might "steal" this idea:)

I was surprised to learn that Coley's students are generally more motivated knowing that their work would be published on the web. Coley informs his students that teachers and children often view their work across the globe. Nice way to motivate students!

Thoughts on Wiki

Both edutopia and teachersfirst offered many great examples on how to use a Wiki in the classroom. As a history teacher, I am considering using a Wiki for the following assignments that I have done in the past, "the old school way":

1. Mock Debate on a person or issue.
2. A travel brochure on a country or state.
3. Movie / Book reviews.

It seems as though many teachers use Wikis to challenge students to discover information more independently. Students can make their own Wikis and learn both content and research skills.
